Going Through Phases...
Gas Laws, Phase
Changes, Bonds and Energy, Entropy
and Driving Forces
Wave your hand in the air in front of you!
Swing your hand into a dishpan full of water (but devoid of dishes)! Pound
your hand on the table. You know there is a very different response with
each action. Every day as we interact with our physical world, we are
constantly experiencing these differences in large part due to the phase
of the material being used. We are going to investigate some of these
differences in properties and work to understand the relationship between these
phases of matter.
Our physical world is made of primarily 3
different phases - gases, liquids, and solids. We are going to begin to
look at how those phases relate to each other by studying the gas phase
first. After which, we will look at how liquids and solids come to be by
understanding how intermolecular connections are made. Finally we will
relate this concept of bonding both intermolecular and intramolecular to the
issue of energy.
